I was first introduced to Merle while working at the First United Methodist Church as a secretary. Merle would come in and help fold and stuff bulletins and we soon became fast friends. He was a blessing and a wonderful friend to my family. We shared meals with him and campfires in our backyard and enjoyed much laughter. He shared many of his life experiences with us. He told us stories of his time in the service and how much he enjoyed Alaska and some of your family adventures there. He shared funny stories of your reunions in Connecticut and he loved to talk about his grandchildren and keep us updated on their lives! He told us many hunting and fishing stories as well. My husband grew up in Wolcott, NY and knew some of Merle's classmates. Although I have never personally met any of you, I feel like I know you all through his stories. Merle extended much love to us and we are so grateful to call him friend and he will remain in our hearts.

Merle showed the grace and solid character that is hard to find in a single individual. We enjoyed his friendship and felt his strong faith in his God as we ministered together in the Newark FUMChurch and community. His family and friends have been blessed to know Merle.

Merle was a great and kind person, the salt of the earth. Frank and I always looked forward to our conversations with Merle. We will always remember the reunion that Merle brought his boat. It was a lovely afternoon enjoying the scenery and the wonderful conversation we had during our voyage.
We will miss him.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Donna , Suzanne and the extended family.

It is impossible to signify how many people were touched by Merle and how kind and generous he has been to everyone he met. He will always be a part of my life in his stories and humor and his tender heartedness, what a softy! He is a root in the family that will always nourish through his love, faith and active life of giving and doing. He was also a good cook!
To all you family keep the humor alive and pass on the love. All blessings and comfort to each of you in this time of grief and also joy at Merle's release. Love Liz Saltos
