Newark / Staten Island - Robert "Bobby" Chee passed away peacefully on January 4, 2024, at 72 years young surrounded by his loving family after suffering from a broken heart.
Born on April 24, 1951, in Brooklyn, NY, Robert was the child of predeceased parents, Wah and Nguh Chee. He graduated from New Utrecht High School and pursued studies at the former Staten Island Community College. Robert took pride in his role as an automotive technician for the NYPD, serving at One Police Plaza in Manhattan for over a decade until his retirement in 2021. His career involved working beneath the hoods of cars, fostering lasting friendships. In his earlier years, Robert also found joy in diverse roles such as a DJ, tow truck driver, bread route driver, and co-owner of Joanne's grocery on 18th Avenue in Brooklyn.
Robert cherished the moments spent with his beloved wife, JoAnne (Melloy) Chee, during their 50 years together. They traveled the world together in their younger years, and he fondly recalled their trips to Tropicana Atlantic City in New Jersey and, more recently, to Del Lago in Waterloo. Bobby had a simple and fulfilling life. A skilled handyman, he took pleasure in collecting cars, watching NASCAR races, WWE, and any sports event. He also enjoyed watching Marvel movies with his sons and grandchildren, taking leisurely walks on Staten Island, playing ball with the family dog, Whiney, and indulging in root beer floats and breakfast with his friend, Gary every Friday morning. Robert was not only a remarkable husband but also a devoted caretaker to JoAnne.
Robert leaves behind three children Denise (Chee) Cregin, Robert Jr. Chee, Joseph Chee, and son-in-law, William Cregin (Big Billy). He is survived by his brother, George Chee, and sister, Lillian (Chee) Meyers. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Chee. He was a favorite uncle to countless nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law to many. Robert was known fondly as superhero Grandpa to his three biggest fans, his grandchildren that he leaves behind, William Jr (lil Billy), Derek (the Flash), and Vincent Cregin.
Heartfelt appreciation and gratitude extended to Dr. Allen Cheng at Rochester General Hospital. A recent connection blossomed into a fast friendship with Bobby, as Dr. Cheng tirelessly spearheaded the efforts to mend his broken heart. The unwavering support, comforting presence, and shared laughter from Dr. Cheng have left an indelible mark on Bobby and his family, for which they are eternally thankful
Bobby will be sorely missed and forever loved.
