Phil was born the son of the late Philip and Minnie (Glerum) Henkel on Monday, August 24, 1931, in Newark, NY. He spent his life in the area, graduating from Newark High School in 1949. Phil owned and operated a dairy farm on Sand Hill Rd. for many years, eventually selling it. After “retiring” he not only took care of a large yard and garden but also worked part time – giving him the opportunity to stay in touch with local farmers. Eventually he and his wife, Marilyn, went to Florida for the winter months and even then worked a few hours a day at their park, doing yard work and general repairs for neighbors. Phil also took an active part in his church. He took pride in all he did, but it seemed his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, even as it expanded with grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Phil will be remembered by his children Laurel (Jack) Beha, John (Jennifer) Henkel and Ronald (Sue) Henkel; grandchildren Margaret (Dan) DeMagistris, Danielle (Thom) Roder, Jeremy (Leslie) Beha, Nicole (Dusty) Hunt, Isaac (Rebecca) Henkel, Ryan (Carissa) Henkel, Andrew Polla, Victoria Polla, Chad (Rachael) Henkel and Carly Henkel; and eleven great-grandchildren; a good friend Dolores Bryant and many other caring friends.

Phil was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn, in 2010; his sister, Cora VanHarken, in 2020.
