Nancy P. Wage
Nancy Wage, of Rochester, Illinois, and formerly of Newark, New York, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 9, 2025. Nancy was a beloved member of both the Rochester and Newark communities, known for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support of her family and friends. Her generous spirit and compassionate nature touched the lives of many, and her legacy of love and friendship will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Nancy was born on May 12, 1945, in Phelps, New York, the daughter of the late Richard and Dorothy (Craig) Proper. She was raised in Phelps and graduated with the Class of 1963 from Phelps Central High School. During her high school years, Nancy was active in many school activities. She served as editor of the school newspaper and performed in theatrical productions, including Our Town and Charm School, reflecting her creativity and leadership from a young age.
Following high school, Nancy began working as a secretary at Sarah Coventry, where she met the love of her life, Jerry Wage. The two were happily married for 51 years and together raised three children. Nancy took great pride in being a devoted and actively involved stay-at-home mother during her children’s formative years. Later, she held various professional roles, ultimately retiring from the Wayne County Department of Social Services.
In retirement, Nancy embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. She became a member of the Red Hat Society, took on part-time roles, and traveled throughout the United States. Her love for family remained at the center of her life—she especially cherished holiday celebrations, which she decorated for with care, hosted elegant Victorian tea parties, and planned memorable family vacations. She also enjoyed gardening and was well known for her famous chocolate chip cookies. A passionate sports fan, Nancy rooted faithfully for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New Orleans Saints.
In her final years, Nancy relocated to Rochester, Illinois, where she continued to spend meaningful time with family, play bingo, and make new friends wherever she went. Her warmth, energy, and unwavering love for those around her will be fondly remembered.
Nancy will be lovingly remembered by her children, Chris (Silvia) Wage, Greg (Cherie) Wage, and Kelly (Ron) Turpin; and her cherished grandchildren, Jamie, Deanna, Todd, Shelby, and Dominick.
She is also survived by her sisters Yvonne (Mike), Diane (Gary), and Lorraine (Bob, predeceased); sister-in-law Charlene Wage; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in her heart.
Nancy was predeceased by her beloved husband of 51 years, Jerry Wage, and her brother, Steven Proper.
Family will greet friends and loved ones on Monday, July 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, 124 West Miller Street, Newark, New York. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home, with burial afterward at Newark Cemetery.
