Merle Nye Obituary

Merle E. Nye

Newark - Merle E. Nye, 88, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2024.

Merle was born the son of the late Walter and Ethel (Calkins) Nye on Thursday, October 24, 1935, in Canaseraga, New York. Growing up, he called the Romulus area home, graduating from Romulus High School. Merle dedicated himself to a career in plumbing, working at the Newark Developmental Center for thirty-three years until his retirement in 1990. After retiring, Merle worked part-time at the Newark Police Department, doing maintenance work to keep busy. Alongside his wife Elizabeth, Merle embarked on two memorable road trips across the United States, staying with friends and reconnecting with his mother in California. An avid hunter and a member of a bowling league, Merle found joy in these pursuits. Most of all, he cherished moments spent with his children and grandchildren.

Merle will be remembered by his loving wife of forty-eight years, Elizabeth; his step-sons Edward Caralla and Scott (Sheila) Caralla; his grandchildren Thomas III (Amanda) Caralla, Nathan (Sarah) Caralla, Nichole Caralla, Courtney (Ryan Fordham) Caralla, Ronald Harper, and Gerilynn Harper; great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Mya, and Nolan; sisters Patricia Chapman and Doris Baldorf; many nieces and nephews.

Merle was predeceased by his daughter, Rose Harper; step-son, Thomas Caralla, Jr.; brother, Milfred (Geraldine) Nye; a brothers-in-law, William Chapman and Robert Baldorf.

The family will greet friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc., 124 W. Miller St, Newark, NY 14513. Burial will be in Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Romulus, NY
