Newark - John E Appfel, 88 entered eternal rest on Friday, May 31, 2019 at his home.

Mr. Appfel was born the son of the late Philip and Christine (Heilmann) Appfel on Thursday, November 20, 1930, in Frankfurt, Germany. He came to the United States in October of 1954. Mr. Appfel attend Syracuse University where he received his Masters Degree. He worked for Newark Developmental Center as a Social Worker until his retirement. Movies, reading, community events, WWII history and flying were things he enjoyed.
The funeral home proudly flies the Air Force Flag in honor of his service from 1955-1957.
John will be remembered by his loving wife of 56 years, Nellie (Bassett) Appfel; son, Philip Appfel; sister, Maryanne Martin of Germany; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter Capt. Nancy Wilcox.
