Heinz was born the son of the late Conrad and Lenore (Wenkel) Mohr on Sunday, October 31, 1926, in Geneva, NY He was only 6 when his mom passed away. When he was 12, his father arranged for him to spend time with his maternal grandparents in Germany. During his five-day voyage across the Atlantic, he met the famous boxer - German heavy-weight champion Max Schmeling. He graduated from Newark High School and went to Cornell University for horticulture. During his time at Cornell, he was drafted into the Air Force. During his service, he served as an interpreter and investigator in Bad Kissingen - Germany. Heinz was able to visit his grandparents while stationed in Germany. As his grandparents were now a part of East Germany, which was part of the Soviet Union, it took special approval. While in the service, he met many great people, both American and German. Many of these friends remained life-long friends.

After an honorable discharge with a letter of commendation, Heinz returned to Newark, New York, where he became president of Wayne Floral Company, founded by his father and Hans Spalteholz, before passing it down to him and his younger brother, Conrad. He then met Catherine DeWall, whom he fell in love with and married on May 15, 1954; They had six children. Heinz and Catherine traveled the world in retirement and met many wonderful people. When they could no longer travel, they loved to go to book shows and collect books - maybe too many books. He was lucky to have traveled to Washington, DC, for the Honor Flight with his son, Peter. He also went on the Soaring Valor trip to New Orleans with his daughter, Kay, and great-granddaughter, Halle.

Catherine passed away on May 19, 2015. In October 2016, a special trip was planned to celebrate Heinz's 90th birthday. Debi coordinated with German relatives to plan a surprise 90th birthday for Heinz. All of Heinz's children, along with their spouses, went on this trip. His grandson, Matt, shared a room with him. This was an unbelievable trip as a family. It started as a Viking cruise up the Elbe River, then ended with over 40 relatives attending his surprise birthday party at the Cafe Einstein in Berlin, Germany.

Heinz could stay in the home he built until he went to continued care primarily because of the support and care from his children, especially Cindy. In August 2021, Heinz went to live at Ewing Continued Care Center in Canandaigua, New York. His room was filled with photos of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. During his time at Ewing, he wanted to teach his caregivers German. There were two groupings of words he focused on teaching them. The first - "danke schoen" thank-you. The second is "auf wiedersehen," which means goodbye or until we meet again. Heinz's friend, Gerry deWit, visited him often at Ewing. Those visits were special to Heinz. They would talk about their greenhouse adventures, politics, and anything else on their minds.

Heinz will be remembered by his children Cindy (Peter) Miller, Debi (Bill) Jones, Kay (Joe) Muscarella and Peter (Rob Ulliman) Mohr; grandchildren Holly, Sunny (Marcus), Matt (Janie), Lance (Amy), Desi (Justin), Nick (Alexis), Laurie, Julie (Justin), Joe (Katie) and Nick; fourteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Heinz was predeceased by wife, Catherine Mary Mohr in 2015; son, Heinz Jr.; daughter, Christine; brother, Conrad (Merle) Mohr; and a sister, Lore (Jack) Gibiser.
