Newark - Gene Oosterling, 89, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.

Gene was born the daughter of the late Winfred and Stella (Gurnsey) Grant on Saturday, March 18, 1933, in New York. She was raised in the Newark area, graduating from Newark High School. Gene began work for New York Telephone as an operator. She continued working while raising a family, eventually retiring as a switchboard operator from Wayne County Nursing Home in 2007. Gene enjoyed knitting and crocheting, gardening, and flowers. In her later years, when mobility was difficult, she enjoyed watching HGTV.

Gene will be remembered by her children; Linda Fowler, Tim Oosterling and Tom (Kay) Oosterling; grandchildren Kelli, Jonathan, Grant and Jacob; great-grandchildren Matt, Isabella, Jackson, Ryli, and Elodie; many nieces and nephews.

Gene was predeceased by her husband David, who passed in 2002; daughter Brenda, who passed in 2021; siblings Oliver (Margaret) Grant, Stanley (Eleanor) Grant, Eldon (Edna) Grant and Evelyn (Fred) Hammond.
