Newark - Mary J. VerStraete, 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 12, 2024, with her family by her side.
Mary, born to the late John and Teresa (Muoio) Santelli on April 11, 1934, in Newark, NY, spent her childhood in the Newark area and graduated from Newark High School. Fondly known as the "Lunch Lady," she dedicated several years to serving the Newark Schools before retiring. She enjoyed crocheting, solving word searches, and listening to Italian music; Andrea Bocelli played softly in the background as she peacefully passed away. Mary cherished holidays with her family, with Christmas being a particularly special time. She remained a devoted member of St. Michael Church throughout her life.
Mary will be remembered by her children Richard (Laurie), Jeffery (Michelle) and Carol (Duane); granddaughter, Teashia (Sybolt); her grandsons Joseph, Matthew, James, Brandon, Cody and Zach; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; her bonus daughter, Jen Rodriguez.
Mary was predeceased by her husband, Donald Verstraete; her sister, Josephine; and a brother, Patsy.
The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at Norman L. Waterman Funeral Home, Inc., 124 W. Miller St, Newark. Mary's funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at St. Michael Church, 401 S. Main Street, Newark. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery, Phelps.
