Lyons/Newark - Robert John Cornwell, 89, died Tuesday (July 26, 2016) at home with his loving family by his side.

Robert was born on December 1, 1926 to the late John and Iva Schlect Cornwell. Robert graduated from Newark High School in 1944. After graduation Robert joined the US Coast Guard. After his service, Robert attended Cornell University where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree.

After earning his degree, Robert worked for Comstock Foods and the Clorox company.

Robert was a very friendly and social man. He was Vice President of Seniors as well as a member of the Mason's and Just Friends social group. Robert sang with the Barbershop Quartet and with the choir at Fairville Presbyterian Church and United Church of Phelps for nearly 59 years. He loved to sing and play his tenor sax for everyone's enjoyment.  Robert also volunteered for over 10 years delivering Meals on Wheels for Wayne County.

Robert enjoyed bowling, traveling, swimming, horseshoes, shuffleboard and playing bingo. He was an avid NY Yankee fan and enjoyed watching the NBA on TV. Robert amazed and wowed everyone when he rode the Jack Rabbit Rollercoaster at Seabreeze (4 times in a row at the age of 87).

On May 19, 2007; he married his "darling" Gloria (VanLare/ Lasher) who survives. He is also survived by his son Donald (Linda Thompson), step children Stephen (Erin) Lasher, Suzanne (Deanne) Lasher and Deborah (Scott) Case.  Grandchildren Teddy and Clara Cornwell, step grandchildren Gabrielle Janto, Ryan and Ayden Lasher, Seth, Logan, Evan and Melaney Case.  Brother in law John (Cheryl) VanLare, sister in law Kathy Cornwell and several special nieces and nephews.

 Robert was predeceased by his first wife Ruth Elizabeth Hardman, parents John and Iva Cornwell, brothers Clayton, Paul and George Cornwell and sister in law Mary Jane Cornwell.

The funeral home proudly flies the US Coast Guard flag in honor of his service to our country.

Family will greet friends on Thursday, August 11, 2016 from 5 to 6 p.m. at United Church of Phelps, 58 Main St, Phelps where a Memorial Service will follow at 6 p.m. In memory of Robert, in lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the United Church of Phelps.
