NEWARK: Harry Jackling Lewis, age 90, went to the house of the Lord on Friday, November 3, 2017 at Newark Wayne Community Hospital with his wife, Jeanne and daughter Cheryl, by his side.

     At Harry’s request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery, County Road 25, Clifton Springs on Saturday, November 11 at 1:00 p.m.

Harry was born on April 12, 1927 at their family home at 612 Colton Avenue, Newark. He was the youngest of the six children of John R. Lewis and Alice E. (Jackling) Lewis.

     In 1945, while still in high school, Harry enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was a recruit at Sampson Naval Base, later transferred to the Naval Training Base in Providence, Rhode Island for Seabee training. He served his tour of duty in the Pacific Theater during World War II with the U.S. Naval Construction Battalion #301. Upon his discharge in 1946, Harry returned to Newark and finished his high school education, graduating in 1947. As a young recruit, Harry met Jeanne Love in Clifton Springs. But, it wasn’t until he finished his military service and

graduated high school that they began a relationship which blossomed into a life-long journey spanning 69 years.

     Harry worked for Freddie’s Auto Supply and Noah’s Ark in Newark, while Jeanne worked for Newton Cosmetics. Jeanne also helped her parents, Wilson and Margaret Love of Clifton Springs, begin “The Merchandiser”, a shopping guide still serving Ontario and Wayne Counties. Seeking better employment, Harry went to work for Eastman Kodak as a chemical mixer and retired in 1986. The act of retirement did not stop Harry and Jeanne from keeping busy. Together, they also managed the family owned Palace Theatre in Clifton Springs for many years until its eventual closure. From there, they joined the Port Gibson Senior Club and, along with Lance and Thelma Goodall, established a travel group appropriately named “Port Gibson Travelers.” For over 23 years they organized and enjoyed many trips by land, air and water, exploring the many sights of America with sometimes more than 60 other travelers. The group was retired in 2015. No matter where the roads took Harry, he remained an active member of Masonic Lodge #83 in Newark and a longtime member of American Legion Post #256 in Canandaigua. Together, Harry and Jeanne also enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, family camping and, of course, traveling.

     Harry is survived by his loving wife and greatest friend Jeanne, daughters Judith (Tony) Blasczienski of Rickman, TN and Cheryl (James) Tears of Clifton Springs. Grandchildren, Todd Bouwens, Sherry Bouwens Freer, Kristine Tears (Kevin) Blair and Michael Tears, Great Grandchildren Tyler and Dylan Freer, Jayden and James Blair, Addison Tears and one brother, Gilbert (Mary) Lewis of Arizona.

     Harry is predeceased by his brothers Charles and Edwin Lewis and two sisters, Dorothy Chapman and Francis Clark.
