The property at the comer of W. Miller and Mason Streets was original
purchased on November 2, 1874 by Helen R. D. Pitts and the house was built
at this time. The Victorian mansion remained a house for around 35 years.
In 1911, John Stuerwald and his wife Eliza,
bought the Pitts mansion, the Stuerwalds lived in the mansion for a
time. John and his wife had one child Fred Stuerwald who was born in
1879. John owned a furniture and undertaking business since 1872 in
East Newark. Most of the early funeral directors started out this way
having a furniture store; towns where not populated enough to be just
a funeral director. The Stuerwald family who also owned the cobblestone
house on the southwest comer of North Main and Stuerwald Avenue. There
is no record if John actually lived there. John Stuerwald married Isabel
Toohill in 1908 they lived on East Miller Street directly in back of
the Stuerwald building. In 1919 John sold the mansion to his son Fred.
Fred Stuerwald and his family lived in the Victorian residence for a few years,
before he turned into the first funeral home in the village of Newark. There
were other funeral directors but all had combined furniture stores and
funeral business. None had houses for the sole purpose of a funeral home.
Stuerwald was in semi-retirement when he leased the funeral home business
and property on W. Miller Street in 1953 with option to buy to B. David
Scott and Alice L. his wife for 5 years. Fred Stuerwald died April 4,
1955. David was a native of Elmira, attending school there. David also
attended Simmons School of Embalming in Syracuse.
In 1986, Charles and Vicki Wanish bought
the Scott Funeral Home, Inc. In May 1994 the Wanish's sold the business
to Norman and Rebecca Waterman. Norman Waterman along with his family
are currently operating the Waterman Funeral Home. Charles, Norman's
son, is a fully licensed funeral director since 1996. Rebecca, Norman's
wife and Elizabeth, Charles wife, work at the funeral home, and with
their husbands when ever needed. Norman & Rebecca currently reside at
at the funeral home. Charles & Elizabeth reside in Gates. Norman & Rebecca
also have a daughter Jennifer. Jennifer & her husband reside in Newark.
Jennifer is a teacher at the Roosevelt Children's Center. Devon, Jennifer's
husband, works at Wegmans.
